Basic Technical Requirements for Accessing SET-BC's Websites,
Online Resources, and Services

SET-BC’s websites and online services conform, to a best-effort level, to all current web standards and protocols. For access to our services you will need a current web browser with JavaScript enabled and a reliable Internet connection, and you must not be blocked from accessing our websites and services by your organization’s web content filtering policies. See below for additional detailed requirements for specific services.

Basic requirements:

  • A current web browser: Internet Explorer 7+, Firefox 3+, Safari 5+, or comparable browser.
  • JavaScript enabled

Additional Requirements for Accessing Multimedia Content

Basic Requirements for Viewing Multimedia Content
You will need an Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. Most of our videos will download best with a downstream bandwidth of at least 100Kbps or higher. For some of our larger videos (10mb+) and online meetings and training sessions, we recommend a downstream bandwidth of at least 1,000Kbps or higher for smoothest playback. Most of our video content requires the Adobe Flash plug-in.

  • Basic browser requirements above met
  • Internet connection with sufficient bandwidth
  • Current Adobe Flash plug-in
  • Working sound card and speakers

Requirements for Participating in Online Training Sessions via SET-BC's Adobe Connect Server

To participate in these sessions, you will need to be able to connect to SET-BC’s Connect server, and will need to be using a suitable browser with the current version of the Flash Player plug-in installed. You will also need a sound card and speakers.

Follow this link to test that your system and audio are functioning correctly. When you test your system, you will be prompted to update your Flash plug-in, and or install a Connect plug-in if this is necessary. You may require assistance or permission from your IT department in order to do this.
Depending on the session, audio for Connect sessions may be provided via your computer or via telephone.

Requirements:

  • Basic multimedia content requirements above met
  • Microphone or headset if computer audio is used
  • Access to a telephone near your computer is telephone audio is used

Additional Requirements for Using Downloaded Content and Resources

Content from the Learning Centre, pictureSET, curriculumSET, Accessible Books, and other resource repositories is published in a variety of formats. To open downloaded files you will need to have the appropriate application installed on your computer.

These can include:

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Kurzweil 3000

SET-BC Email Communication

To send and receive email from SET-BC, you will need to ensure that any spam or junk email filtering software that is in use either on your own system, or on your network, is not blocking messages from/to SET-BC’s mail servers or specific SET-BC email addresses.

Because email from SET-BC may contain confidential information about students, certain SET-BC services require that you use a recognized school district email address (e.g. yourname@sd99.bc.ca) and will not send email to your personal email address or a third party email provider such as Hotmail or gMail.

Mail delivery and spam filtering details:

  • All SET-BC email originates from, and is delivered to, smtp.setbc.org (142.33.243.216).
  • The above hostname corresponds to our DNS MX record, and a reverse DNS lookup on 142.33.243.216 should resolve to smtp.setbc.org. Most correctly configured spam filters will therefore not block email from SET-BC. If you suspect that email to you from SET-BC is being blocked by your district or organization’s spam filtering, contact the appropriate system administrator.
  • If you suspect that email sent from you to SET-BC is being blocked by SET-BC, contact SET-BC IT at it@setbc.org.
